FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many countries, each nation and region will result in a different taste from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the region, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also show fruit or berry tasts and can exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher and can exhibit grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be better to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can exhibit a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can display nicerbetter flavour & are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but generally less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, many people prefer to have Arabica because it is less bitter & displays a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee because it is harder to cultivate.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is typically cultivated at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the plantation, has more bean yield and is more resistant to pest insects.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roast process also plays a major role in the taste profile of the coffee beans. Blending different varieties and roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & change every aspect of the roasting process to make different tastes in their coffee & maintain consistency between batches of coffee. Taste changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of other conditions that are controlled during the roasting.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roast coffee beans will keep more flavours than dark roasts. This means that the distinct flavours of the coffee from the various regions can often be more pronounced in light roasted beans. This is key to think about when buying beans.
