FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each country and region will produce a different flavour from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours & can exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which tend to be stronger, harsher and can exhibit grainy or rubbery flavours.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can show a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica & Robusta can exhibit superior flavour & are very renowned.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but commonly less caffeine than Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, typically people would rather drink Arabica because it is less bitter & exhibits a better taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta coffee because it is more difficult to farm.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is typically grown at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the plantation, has more fruit yield and is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & locations. This is because of the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roasting proceedure also influences a major role in the flavour profile of the beans. Combining different types & roasting is an art and science. Professional roasters meticulously control & change every aspect of the roasting proceedure to make different flavours in their beans & maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Flavour differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of additional aspects that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted coffee. Light roasted beans usually retain more tastes than dark roasts. This means that the distinguishable flavours of the beans from the different regions are be more pronounced in lighter roasted beans. This is key to think about when buying beans.
