FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each country & location will make a distinct taste from what is essentially the same coffee tree due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are usually sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and can exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that tend to be stronger, harsher & may have grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can exhibit a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can display superior flavour and are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but commonly less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, commonly people would rather consume Arabica because it is not as bitter and shows a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta beans because it is harder to cultivate.

Arabica is cultivated in colder sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is usually grown at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ & tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the plantation, has greater bean yield & is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting process also plays a significant role in the flavour profile of the beans. Blending different varieties and roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control & adjust every aspect of the roasting process to craft different flavours in their beans & ensure consistency between batches of roasts. Flavour differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of additional conditions that are regulated during the roasting.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted coffee. Light roast beans typcially keep more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinct flavours of the coffee from the different regions can often be more distinct in lighter roasted beans. This is important to consider when buying coffee beans.
