FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many nations, each nation and region will result in a different flavour from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica tree that are typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the region, they are usually sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours & may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher and can display grainy or rubbery flavours.

Usually people find the taste of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can have a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica & Robusta can have nicerbetter taste & are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but commonly less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, most people prefer to consume Arabica because it is less bitter and shows a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee because it is harder to farm.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is typically farmed at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the plantation, has greater bean yield and is more resistant to bugs.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is due to the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roast process also plays a significant part in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Blending different types & roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters meticulously control and change every aspect of the roast process to make different tastes in their coffee and maintain consistency between batches of coffee. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other conditions that are controlled during the roasting.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted coffee. Light roasted coffee typcially retain more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the marked flavours of the coffee from the different regions can often be more distinguishable in light roasted coffee. This is important to consider when purchasing coffee beans.
