FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many nations around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many countries, each nation & region will make a different flavour from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are usually sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours and may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher and may have grainy or rubbery overtones.

Usually people find the flavour of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can show a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can show superior taste & are extremely popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, many people would rather have Arabica as it is less bitter and exhibits a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee because it is harder to cultivate.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually cultivated at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the plantation, has a higher bean yield and is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roasting proceedure also influences a major role in the flavour characteristics of the coffee beans. Blending different varieties and roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control & adjust every aspect of the roasting process to develop different flavours in their coffee & ensure consistency across batches of beans. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of other things that are controlled during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted beans. Light roasted coffee beans will retain more flavours than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the beans from the different areas can often be more distinguishable in light roasted coffee. This is key to consider when purchasing beans.
