FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each country & location will make a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub that are usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the region, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours & may have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher & can exhibit grainy or rubbery flavours.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can display a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can show superior flavour & are extremely popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but usually less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, usually people prefer to drink Arabica as it is less bitter and exhibits a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee because it is harder to farm.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is often grown at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & withstands a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the plantation, has more fruit yield and is more resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is because of the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roasting proceedure also influences a significant role in the flavour characteristics of the beans. Blending different varieties & roasting is both an art & science. Professional roasters carefully control and adjust every aspect of the roasting proceedure to develop different flavours in their coffee & maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Taste differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other aspects that are regulated during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roast coffee beans usually retain more flavours than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable tastes of the coffee from the various locations are be more distinct in light roasted coffee. This is key to think about when buying beans.
