FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many countries around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many countries, each country & region will produce a different flavour from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are usually sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also have fruit or berry flavours & may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that tend to be stronger, harsher and can have grainy or rubbery tastes.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can show a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually thought as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can show nicerbetter taste & are extremely renowned.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but generally less caffeine as opposed to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, most people would rather have Arabica because it is not as bitter and displays a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta coffee because it is more difficult to cultivate.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually farmed at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has greater fruit yield & is better resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is due to the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roasting proceedure also influences a significant part in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Blending different varieties and roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control and change every aspect of the roast process to develop different flavours in their beans & ensure consistency between batches of coffee. Taste differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of additional conditions that are regulated during the process.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted coffee. Light roasted coffee beans usually retain more tastes than darker roasts. This means that the distinguishable tastes of the beans from the different locations are be more distinguishable in lighter roasted coffee. This is important to think about when purchasing beans.
